Up, Up and Away....
Up, Up and Away....
It's a stream-of-consciousness thing... when I thought about something being dimensional... the Fifth Dimension popped into my head.
This is better.
These are Radiant Stars - also known as Moravian Stars. They're made using a really cool dimensional form of English Paper Piecing. Instead of being from a thick-ish paper, these pieces are cut from cardstock and they're one of the Fabriflair kit-patterns from Amy Barickman and Indygo Junction.
I love them because they're perfect for charm packs. And they look even better in person - having hovered around the Indygo Junction booth in Salt Lake City this past May to get a better look, I know of what I speak.
I mention them today because the holidays are coming and I've gotten a couple of these kits to make gifts. (Or to keep for myself...) There are six different kits - essentially four different designs.
There is the Navette Needlecase - probably my favorite because I know I can get this one finished by December.
Each kit creates two 3" x 5" tri-fold needle cases. If you want scrappy, a couple of Layer Cake squares will work perfectly for these. Or fat eighths and fat quarters.
The Brio Spheres can be used as a faceted sphere or bowls.
Each kit comes with enough mat board pieces to make a single complete sphere or two bowls. The Small Brio Sphere uses 6 - 1/8th yard cuts, 1 charm pack of 5" squares, Layer Cake Squares or assorted scraps or fat quarters. It would also work with a pack of 3.5" Moda Treats! The small sphere measures 3 3/4" tall-across.
The Large Brio Sphere measures approx. 6" tall and it's made with 1/4 yard cuts or fat quarters, 5" charm squares or Layer Cake squares. .
The Radiant Star kits also come in two sizes. The Large Radiant - or Moravian - Star kit creates one 10" star per package. While you could use bigger cuts of fabric, this kit is perfect - perfect! - for charm packs. Like maybe something metallic or holiday-themed.
The Radiant Star - Small kit makes one 5" Moravian star and it can be made with a pack of 5" charm squares or two Mini Charm Packs of 2.5" squares. Layer Cake squares, Jelly Roll strips and other cuts will also work... but more fabrics is better, right?
So what else do you need?
Here's the supply list:
- Fabriflair Kit
- Fabric. Of course. We like charm packs.
- A fabric glue stick or pen - we love the Sewline Pens.
- Sewing needles - use the one you like best - I like Straw-Milliner's needles.
- Thread
While you could theoretically use any thread, Amy suggests the Crossroads 12 wt. threads from Sulky. The thicker thread gives a little more stability with the heavier matboard templates. It also gives the finished pieces added dimension, a bit of embellishment. The Crossroads threads come in more than a dozen thread set assortments. The sets are either twelve 50-yard spools or six 330-yard spools. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Broadway and Grand... those are some of the names of the very yummy thread collections.
If you're interested in seeing how to make one of these Fabriflair kits, there is a YouTube video - Fabriflair - Create a Radiant Star!
When they heard how much we loved these Fabriflair kits, Amy and her crew donated a set of kits for a giveaway.
The Trilliant Ornament! I knew I was missing one!
We're going to include a few charm packs - one for each kit.
Just leave a comment by Midnight on Sunday - October 16th - and you're entered to win. It's that simple!
Happy Friday!
